Nokia and Cradle collaborate to provide opportunities for local mobile developers
September 15, 2009

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, September 15, 2009 - Nokia today announced that it has entered a strategic collaboration with Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd (‘Cradle’) to provide support to technopreneurs and developers in mobile services and applications in Malaysia at its OneConnectedWorld event, held in Kuala Lumpur.

This strategic collaboration will help drive mobile content and applications development in Malaysia and foster the growth of an innovative society through an open developer ecosystem from ideation through to product development and commercialization.

“The mobile application industry continues to be fast-growing as consumers look for ways to customize their mobile experience. This phenomenon presents many opportunities for local developers. Through our collaboration with Cradle, we want to ensure that these developers are equipped with the resources and support that will help them raise their expertise and showcase their talent in mobile applications development on the global stage,” said Kenny Mathers, Head of Developer Relations and Marketing, Forum Nokia, Asia Pacific.

Under this collaboration, Cradle will offer funding of up to RM150,000 to local aspiring technopreneurs and mobile developers for each selected innovative technology idea with good commercialisation potential via its Cradle Investment Programme.

Nokia, through the Forum Nokia organization, will provide development and go-to-market support to help developers complete and deploy their mobile content and applications through the Ovi Store, an evolving media service that consolidates existing content services into a one-stop shop for free and paid content.

“We see tremendous technopreneurial talent in Malaysia. While these technopreneurs have the skills and competency to compete globally, they often lack funding, business skills and exposure to see through their innovation from idea to market successfully. This collaboration with Nokia reinforces our commitment to help aspiring technopreneurs to bridge that gap to commercialisation by providing technopreneurs with funding, industrial guidance and market access for their innovations to be successfully commercialised,” said Nazrin Hassan, CEO, Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd.

The Cradle-Nokia collaboration is based on the “conveyor-belt” method, an idea-to-market ecosystem whereby applications get funnelled in from a partner or a specific programme and is later taken up by the same partner for commercialization.

In this collaboration, members of Forum Nokia will be encouraged to submit their ideas for innovative mobile content and applications. These ideas will in turn be screened for project viability to ensure that they meet the necessary requirements and criteria, and upon approval, will be funded by Cradle via its Cradle Investment Programme. Once completed, these projects will then be commercialized through Nokia’s Ovi Store.

Since its inception in 2003, Cradle has funded about 369 ideas via the Cradle Investment Programme, of which 48% of the completed ideas have been commercialised.

Nokia’s contribution to the grant will include a support package that covers a one-year Forum Nokia PRO membership, participation in the prototype device loan and discounted device purchase programme, as well as early access to software development kits (SDKs) and tools. Once mobile content and applications are fully developed and functional, Nokia will waive publishing fees and provide priority publishing to the Ovi Store, as well as expose the developer to other channels to monetize their content and applications, including mobile operators and advertising networks.
